Day 1: Write an Elevator Pitch for Your Blog
I’ve done a lot with my site since I launched this blog back in April of ’08, yet I know I still have SO much more to learn. The first lesson and ‘homework’ revolve around the idea of creating an elevator pitch for your blog. I had no idea what this was, but Darren (the ProBlogger) and Wikipedia explain it very well: “An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride (for example, thirty seconds or 100-150 words).” – Wikipedia
The goal of an elevator pitch is both to communicate what you do and to get the person you’re communicating it to to want to know more. It can be used as your blog’s tagline, about page, in conversations about your blog, on business cards, social media profiles, email signatures – the possibilities are endless.
This is the tagline for my blog:
- Riding With No Hands… I’m free to reach for what I really, really love!
And I use the following on my About page and an excerpt in my Twitter profile:
If I could compare my life – motherhood, marriage, and everything it entails – to anything, it would be to riding a bike with no hands. Teetering along, having little control over what happens makes me a little nervous sometimes, but I think I’ve found a good balance and it just feels right. Sure, sometimes I feel like I’m headed straight into a hedge and I’ve come across more than my fair share of potholes, but I just hold my breath, take it all in, and enjoy every second, because life is passing me by way too fast. ‘Riding with no hands’ I’m free to reach for the things I really, really love and am having so much fun along the way! Here you can read about my life as a stay-at-home mom to two beautiful little girls, learn about all the products we use and love, and even enter a giveaway or two!
Does that leave you wanting to know more? I hope so! Today’s homework?
- Create an elevator pitch. You can read more about this at ProBlogger. Think about what you would say to someone that asks you “Tell me about your blog…” If you’re not sure you can pinpoint exactly what that is, ask a friend.
- Update your About page. Create one if you haven’t already done so. Link to it below so we can learn more about you! You might also want to update your Twitter profile. I happen to link mine to my About page instead of my blog’s homepage.
If you’d like to participate, leave me a comment so I can visit your blog and see how you’re doing! You can also link up specific blog posts relating to today’s challenge below:

Thanks for participating, Jessica! I think your title definitely says it all! The question is, how would you expand on that if you’re talking to someone about your blog, say, on an elevator ride?
I’m heading over to read your list post now.
I’m a day behind, so I am catching up. I just added my ABOUT PAGE a month ago when I added my buttons for better organization.

KimmyG´s last blog ..How Far Will You Go?
Kimmy, I really enjoyed reading through your blog. I think your ‘about me’ is right on target – I loved learning the reason behind your blog’s name. My only suggestion to you right now would be to write more frequently!
I finally did an about page and a tagline. I’m happy with my tagline, but the about page still needs some work…. WAY too long and confusing. But it’s a start!
Thanks again (very much) for leading us through this.
Kelly´s last blog ..Friday Follow – The Oscars
Catching up on everyone’s blogs today… sorry it’s taken me a while to respond, Kelly!
I agree with you, I like your tagline – “Is today your lucky day?” – but it gets kind of lost because it’s so small. Would there be any way to incorporate it into your header (where the big white space is, maybe?)
And your about page – I actually like it a lot! The way you use a bigger font to highlight the main points, expanding upon that in a paragraph underneath, is really great. I can scan your about page, and just by reading the titles, learn exactly what your blog is about.
You do want to work on an ‘elevator pitch,’ though. Just imagine if you were on an elevator with a new blogger friend – how would you describe your blog in a few sentences?
